By PGA

The 2020 PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, from Aug. 3-9, will deliver unprecedented live, wire-to-wire 72-hole coverage to viewers via CBS, ESPN, ESPN+ and PGAChampionship.com.
The 102nd PGA Championship will be the first Championship in the landmark new 11-year agreement between CBS, ESPN and the PGA of America, combining to deliver more than 170 cumulative hours of live coverage – the most in PGA Championship history – from the first tee shot to the final putt across their broadcast, cable and digital platforms.  As of today, 97 of the top 100 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are scheduled to compete.
This year’s Championship will be broadcast in primetime on both ESPN and CBS, with the champion being awarded the Wanamaker Trophy on CBS Sunday night, August 9. This year’s Championship on the West Coast provides an opportunity to reach a prime-time audience in the Eastern and Central Time Zones for the first time since 1998.
“This year’s PGA Championship will be unlike any of the previous 101 that have come before,” said PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh. “We are grateful to Gov. Newsom and the State of California, and Mayor Breed and the City and County of San Francisco – they have been terrific partners in helping us navigate the many challenges to make it possible to responsibly conduct the first Major Championship of 2020, the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park, our second-straight year at a public course.
“Our hope is that watching the world’s best players compete alongside the Team of 20 PGA Professionals in the field for the first major championship of the year will lift people’s spirits and showcase what PGA Members do everyday to inspire the future of the game. It’s the perfect time to introduce the PGA Championship’s first wire-to-wire broadcast coverage with CBS and our new partner ESPN. We’re excited about what’s in store for fans on CBS, ESPN and ESPN+. While the local community cannot be with us physically onsite, we will certainly carry their spirit of resilience and unity with us next week.”

Seven of the past 10 winners of the PGA Championship went on to become No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking, including Koepka, who won his second consecutive PGA Championship in May 2019 at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. Birdies for St. Jude fundraiser unites World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational fans, PGA TOUR athletes to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

By ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

StMEMPHIS, Tenn.July 27, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Birdies for St. Jude, launching today, will give fans a unique interactive opportunity to engage with PGA TOUR athletes when the world’s best golfers descend on MemphisJuly 30 – August 2, for the 2020 World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. With this virtual front row to the tournament action, participants from around the world can team up with their favorite participating golfer to make a one-time donation or commit to a pledge for each birdie carded by that player during the tournament, all benefiting the kids at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the sole charitable beneficiary of the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, announced Birdies for St. Jude as a fun and exciting opportunity to bring the action directly to fans across the globe. Participating PGA TOUR pros will be featured on a leaderboard throughout the tournament, while fans virtually engage in the real-time excitement to support the kids at St. Jude.

“We are so thankful for the decades of support from the PGA TOUR, our partners at FedEx and golf fans around the world who support our life-saving mission,” said Richard C. Shadyac Jr., President and CEO of ALSAC, the fundraising and awareness organization for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “The golf community stands with us all year long supporting our life-saving work. This year, we’re asking fans to participate virtually, by engaging in the Birdies for St. Jude campaign, as an important way to help raise funds and awareness so the world can witness how kindness and compassion from our partners, the athletes and fans creates such a meaningful and lasting impact on the kids at St. Jude.”

Patient art is an important feature of the tournament as it displays not only the talent of St. Jude kids, but also that art is a key component of the treatment and care at St. Jude. In 2019, patient art was featured on caddie bibs and FedEx collaborated with FootJoy® and St. Jude to create and deliver a special pair of shoes for Justin Thomas, including a design by patient Bailey. For 2020, art will play an even bigger role. Several patients’ works of art will be prominent on caddie bibs and others featured by athletes and then as charity auction items through Birdies for St. Jude during the tournament. Thanks to generous donors, families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.

Many St. Jude patients, including those who have provided their artwork this year, are at the heart of what makes the World Golf Championships-FedEx St. Jude Invitational so special. Their strength and inspirational stories always make an impact on PGA TOUR pros and fans alike. For example, resident competitive golfers, Dakota, 14, and Ally, 17, hope to become professional golfers one day. Earlier this year, Dakota carded his first career hole-in-one while still in treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). He recently completed treatment and returns for ongoing checkups. Ally, a strong competitor and inspiration on her high school golf team, is now out of treatment after a diagnosis of medulloblastoma, a rare brain tumor.

St. Jude patient Caleb, 11, is a fan of professional wrestling and is currently in treatment for ALL. Nate, 10, is now out of treatment for medulloblastoma and spends his time focusing on his favorite sports, golf, video games and basketball. Feature stories on St. Jude patients and their participation in the tournament are available on St. Jude Inspire.

Donor support during the World Golf Championships-St. Jude Invitational helps St. Jude continue its lifesaving mission: Finding cures. Saving children.®

Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to more than 80 percent since it opened more than 50 years ago. The global awareness opportunity during the WGC-FESJI is important because St. Jude freely shares its groundbreaking discoveries, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists can use that knowledge to save thousands more children around the world. St. Jude will not stop until no child dies from cancer.

USGA Receives World’s Largest Collection of Golf-Themed Comic Books

By USGA

LIBERTY CORNER, N.J. (July 22, 2020) – The USGA Golf Museum has expanded its world-leading golf library and artifact collection thanks to a recent donation of more than 560 golf-themed comic books. The continued effort to preserve the stories and images of how golf has been played and portrayed through time is part of the association’s mission to champion and advance the game.

The collection, which is the most significant of its kind in the world, contains comics dating to the 1930s that feature golf on the cover. A selection of the covers has been digitized and can be found on usga.org.

Indiana-based collectors Charlie and Sara Haviza spent more than 30 years amassing the unique collection while becoming the world’s leading authorities on the topic. The couple, who are longtime USGA Members, donated the collection to the USGA Golf Museum this spring.

Most notably, the collection includes:

– New Funnies No. 108 from 1946, the first golf cover by Walter Lantz, one of the iconic comic artists of the 20th century

– Boy Comics No. 23, a World War II era comic featuring Crimebuster, a boy superhero (1945)

– Mickey Mouse Magazine No. 9 (1934)

– Examples of every known golf cover featuring cat and mouse characters Tom and Jerry

The comics in the collection closely reflect the periods in American history in which they were published, and the evolution of individual characters over time likewise mirrors changes in society and its values. More specifically, the covers provide important perspectives on the perception of golf at the time and its role within communities.

“Beginning with the golf boom of the late 1800s, golf was featured in just about every form of artistic and cultural expression, including music, theater, film, art and literature,” said Rand Jerris, senior managing director of Public Services for the USGA. “Collections such as this provide alternative methods of storytelling that create important pathways for more people to be exposed to golf.”

The donation greatly enhances the more than 200 golf-themed comic books the USGA already held in its library collection.

The USGA Golf Museum is located on the campus of the USGA’s headquarters in Liberty Corner, N.J., with an extensive digital catalog that can be found at usga.org. The commitment to the preservation and celebration of golf history is part of the association’s mission and is funded in large part by revenue generated from the U.S. Open.

By PGA

Military Veterans with physical challenges, and PGA Professionals passionate about developing golf programming for our nation’s heroes will be featured in a nationwide, one-hour special on CBS Television network, “PGA HOPE: Helping Our Patriots Everywhere,” airing on Saturday, July 25, at 1:30 p.m. ET. The program will be hosted by CBS Sports’ James Brown, and includes a guest appearance and introduction from six-time major champion and United States Marine Corps Veteran Lee Trevino.

PGA HOPE is the flagship military program of PGA REACH, the charitable foundation of the PGA of America. The national program introduces golf to military Veterans with service-related disabilities to enhance their physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. Each year, PGA HOPE helps thousands of Veterans assimilate back into their communities through the social interaction the game provides.
“Golf has become a therapeutic part of the rehabilitation process for many Veterans, and it’s fantastic that we have an opportunity to showcase these remarkable and inspirational stories to a national audience through our partnership with CBS Sports,” said PGA President Suzy Whaley.
Headlining the segments are Veterans who participated at the 2019 PGA HOPE National Golf & Wellness Week at Congressional Country Club and are now serving as PGA HOPE Ambassadors in their respective PGA Sections. This includes making sure they are comfortable using adaptive equipment, especially for Veterans who have endured Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), amputation, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and more.
The special highlights the North Florida PGA Section, which found a fitting way to honor the memory of the 2018 Patriot Award recipient Ken Juhn, PGA. The Section has renamed its Veterans program the Ken Juhn Tampa Bay PGA HOPE Chapter. Juhn, a PGA Member for 34 years, passed away on July 20, 2019, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Also featured is 2017 Patriot Award recipient Kevin McKinley, PGA of the Michigan PGA Section. Since the inception of the Folds of Honor Foundation, McKinley has been instrumental in fundraising efforts at Treetops Resort for Patriot Golf Day, which will be celebrated once again over Labor Day Weekend.

Persaud, a PGA HOPE Ambassador, served as a U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant. He began with PGA HOPE in 2016, and has been involved in his Section’s PGA HOPE Programming. He also competed on the Metropolitan PGA Section’s 2018 PGA HOPE Secretary’s Cup Team.
Anderson-Kokell will share her inspiring story of helping the PGA HOPE program grow in South Florida through Veteran recruitment at both The Honda Classic and a local VA Hospital. She also played a key role in growing female Veteran participation. Anderson-Kokell received several honors as a U.S. Army Specialist, including the National Service Award, Outstanding Trainee Award and Good Conduct Medal.

Joanna Coe, PGA Set to Be First Female to Compete in the State Open of Virginia

By PGA
The State Open of Virginia is one of the biggest golf tournaments played in Virginia year-in and year-out. Some of golf’s biggest names have won the event including Sam Snead, Chandler Harper, Bobby Cruickshank, Keith Decker, Vinny Giles, and Lanny and Bobby Wadkins. With such a storied past, it is not often history is made in this event anymore. That will change this year as Joanna Coe, PGA will be the first female to compete in the tournament in its 96-year history.
Joanna Coe is originally from Mays Landing, New Jersey and boasts an impressive playing career. She attended Rollins College in Winter Park, FL where she was a four-time All-American, winning the 2008 Division II Individual and Team National Championships as a Freshman. After a decorated college career, she played professionally on the Symetra Tour before becoming a PGA Professional. She has continued her great play as a PGA Professional as she was named the 2019 PGA National Women’s Player of the Year, played on the U.S. Women’s PGA Cup Team, and is a 4-time winner of the MAPGA Women’s Player of the Year. She is currently the Assistant Director of Instruction at Baltimore Country Club in Timonium, MD.
Her illustrious playing career has led her to be the first female to compete in the State Open of Virginia and she is no stranger when it comes to playing with the guys.
“It [the longer yardages] is a more comfortable yardage for me anyway. It frees me up to hit driver and hit it hard and that’s more of the player I am rather than laying up and being conservative,” says Coe. She will look to hold her own in this historic event as she tees off in Round 1 on Thursday at 1:30. “I’m just looking forward to playing competitive golf again. I like to challenge myself in a new place and I love seeing how I can manage and shoot some good scores at a place I’m not familiar with.”
She qualified for the event as an exempt player by being in the Top-10 of the 2019 MAPGA Player of the Year Points and also for making the 2020 PGA Professional National Championship field. The Middle Atlantic PGA and Virginia State Golf Association are excited to have her in this year’s field. The tournament will take place at Ballyhack Golf Club in Roanoke, VA on July 16-18.
